Kolkata: Anup Kumar Samanta, a pedestrian who was standing on Strand Road near Millennium Park, had his right leg severed from the knee after being knocked down by a minibus that ran over the pavement and hit a tree.
Five passengers travelling in the bus received injuries in the incident. Some are stated to be in serious condition.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon, leading to disruption of traffic movement in the area for a while. Senior police officers later brought the situation under control. The bus driver and conductor fled from the spot immediately after the accident.
Police said that the Howrah-bound minibus was picking up passengers from the Rabindra Nagar area on Monday afternoon, when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it ran over the pavement. Local residents told police that the driver was overspeeding when the accident took place.
Samanta, identified as a bank employee, was standing there after getting down from another bus a few moments before the accident took place. He was waiting there to cross the road, police said.
He was immediately rushed to SSKM Hospital. The five injured passengers were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Police have seized the bus, the frontal portion of which has been damaged in the accident.
Two killed, 11 injured in 3 separate accidents: Meanwhile, two persons were killed while eleven others have been injured in three separate road accidents in the districts since late Sunday night.
One incident took place at Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas in the wee hours of Monday, when two bikers were hit by a speeding truck. The victims have been identified as Binay Naskar (36) and Bappa Das (23).
According to the South 24-Parganas police, the deceased were going to Kamalgaji from Sonarpur on a motorcycle. When they were passing through the Milanpally area, the bike collided head-on with a loaded truck coming from the opposite direction. The duo suffered critical injuries on various parts of their bodies. Local residents rushed to the spot and took the victims to a nearby hospital, where both of them were declared brought dead.
The local people, however, managed to catch hold of the truck driver, who was later handed over to the police. The vehicle was also seized. The incident had triggered a traffic jam in the area for some time in the morning.
The other accident took place near Kunur River Bridge at Kanksa on Panagarh-Moregram Road late on Sunday morning, when a private car rammed into a truck from behind. Police said that four passengers, including two women, were injured in the incident.
They were immediately rushed to a private hospital in Durgapur. It was learnt that some of the injured passengers are in critical condition.
The victims were returning to Palasdiha after attending a programme at Deul in Kanksa, late on Sunday night. The driver lost control over the vehicle and hit a truck from behind.
Police are investigating to know if the driver had fallen asleep at the time of the accident. Raids are being conducted to nab the truck driver who had fled from the spot after the accident.
