Kolkata: Officials from Patuli police station came to the rescue of a mentally challenged mother and son duo who were in extremely sick condition languishing at their apartment at Southern Garden area.
According to sources, the neighbours of the duo sought help from the police on Friday late night informing them that Swapna Mitra (70) and her son Dipankar (42) have fallen ill.
The two, both mentally challenged, have been residing in the apartment for many years and after the death of the septuagenarian's husband some years back, it was one of their relatives at Howrah who used to arrange food for the duo. However, for the last few days, they were unfed as no food was supplied to them. Both of them were under medication but were unable to buy medicines as they had no money.
The police acted promptly and with the help of an NGO working for the mentally challenged rescued the two. They were first taken to the psychiatry department at SSKM Hospital for treatment and after they slightly recovered, they were produced at Alipore Court for necessary proceedings. The police had prayed for sending them off to Pavlov Mental Hospital for treatment and the court agreed to their plea. The police then took them there in the evening and have already informed their relative in Howrah about the entire matter. "We have done a social job and we act in a similar manner whenever people are in crisis," a senior police officer said.
