Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday congratulated M K Stalin for becoming the president of DMK.

In a tweet, the Trinamool Congress supremo stated: "Congratulations and best wishes to @mkstalin for being elected President of the DMK @arivalayam."

The highest post of the party became vacant with the death of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M Karunanidhi. He had passed away on August 7.

On the day Karunanidhi passed away, the Bengal Chief Minister had tweeted: "Today India lost one of its greatest sons. And Tamil Nadu lost its father figure. Farewell @Kalaignar89. My deepest condolences to the people of Tamil Nadu, @arivalayam, @mkstalin, @KanimozhiDMK and family. India mourns your loss."

Banerjee had also gone to Chennai to pay homage to Karunanidhi on the day he had passed away.

It may be mentioned that Stalin had supported the move of Banerjee to bring together all the anti-BJP political parties under one umbrella for a one-to-one fight in the forthcoming general elections in 2019.
