Kolkata: An EMU local train overshot platform and hit a buffer at Ranaghat station on Sunday, leading to the suspension of the motorman.

According to an Eastern Railway spokesperson, no injury had, however, taken place as the train was at a very low speed. According to the spokesperson, the suburban local train from Bongaon was to terminate at Ranaghat station. The train was running at 5 km per hour, when it hit the buffer. There was no substantial damage to the train. The incident took place at around 7.23 am on Sunday morning.

The first compartment of the train was damaged after hitting the buffer. The metal buffers at the end of platform number 4 have been damaged after the train hit them. The buffers are meant to stop trains in such circumstances, where the locomotive fails to stop at a designated point.

The motorman, however, claimed that a mentally challenged man had entered the driver's cabin, while the train was entering the platform on Sunday morning. Senior railway officials rushed to the spot after the accident. An inquiry has been initiated in this connection.

Action will be taken against the motorman if any negligence found on his part, the spokesperson said.

The motorman of the Bongaon-Ranaghat train has been put under suspension till the completion of inquiry into the accident, a senior official of the Eastern Railway said. The mentally challenged man was later detained by the GRP at Ranaghat and an investigation is being held to ascertain the facts.
