Three persons were killed in two separate road accidents that took place in the state on Friday.
An elderly man, Wahab Seikh (60) and his grandson Sujauddin Seikh (4) died while Wahab's wife received critical injuries when the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a speeding tractor at Chuabazar area under Hariharpara police station in Murshidabad at around 11.45 am.
The injured woman has been undergoing treatment at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. The local people put up roadblock at the accident site and damaged the tractor following the accident. The victims were all residents of Garibpur area under Domkal police station.
Wahab was taking his wife and grandson to his daughter's house at Hariharpara. When they were crossing the Chaubazar area, a tractor coming from the opposite direction lost control and hit the motorcycle. Wahab and his grandson died at spot after being crushed under the wheels of the tractor while Wahab's wife was rescued by the local people in a critical condition. She was first taken to the Hariharpara Block Hospital but was later shifted to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated. The local residents managed to catch the vehicle while its driver fled from the spot immediately after the accident. The agitated mob put up a roadblock alleging that no speed breakers have been constructed despite repeated pleas to the police and the district administration. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and the block was lifted after they provided assurances to construct speed breakers.
In another incident, one Sunandita Bag (22), a housewife from Baganchra village at Shantipur in Nadia was killed after being hit by a speeding truck. The incident took place when the victim was taking a walk on Friday morning. The local residents rushed the victim to the nearby hospital where she was pronounced brought dead by the doctors.
The local residents staged a demonstration alleging that the vehicles often pass through the area at a high speed
resulting in accidents. The demonstration was lifted following the intervention of senior police officers.
