Two persons including a school student were killed and many others been injured in two separate road accidents in two districts.
One incident took place at Nimtala area of Howrah on Uluberia-Amta Road when a Class XI girl died after being knocked down by a speeding truck.
The incident triggered tension in the area with local people staging protests against the rash driving of vehicles.
Police said that the victim, Rimpa Samanta, a resident of Katlia in Uluberia was going to take private tuitions at Nimtala area on Wednesday morning. She was cycling along the road when a loaded truck lost control and hit her from behind.
The local residents chased the truck and managed to catch it few meters away from the place of the accident. The driver and helper of the vehicle managed to flee from the spot. After being informed, the police reached the spot and took the victim to a hospital where she was pronounced brought dead. The local residents alleged that loaded trucks often ply through the area at a high speed resulting in fatal road accidents. Despite their pleas, the police failed to take any steps against the vehicles that flout the traffic norm, alleged the locals.
In another incident, a woman was killed and 25 others were injured after the bus she was travelling in collided head on with a truck coming from the opposite direction at Nakashipara on National Highway 34. The bus was going to Siliguri from Kolkata. The victim, Maya Roy had received severe injuries on various parts of her body. The injured persons were taken to Shaktinagar district hospital while three injured persons have been shifted to a city hospital. Six were undergoing treatment at Shaktinagar district hospital with serious injuries while the rest were let off after preliminary treatment.
Police are investigating if the bus driver or the driver of the truck fell asleep while the accident took place. Police have started a probe in this regard.
