Update: 2017-06-28 17:18 GMT
Brabourne Road flyover will remain shut for three days in July due to the tunneling work for the East-West Metro taking place in that particular stretch.

A set of decisions on traffic regulation and other measures to ensure safety of people when the Metro work is on at the busy Brabourne Road and its adjacent areas has been taken in the meeting held on Wednesday in the New Secretariat building.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, senior officials of the state Transport department including its Principal Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Metro Railway officials, Additional Commissioner of Police Vineet Goyal and DC Traffic V Solomon of Kolkata Traffic Police were present in the meeting.

There will be restrictions on plying of vehicles on Brabourne Road flyover and the road under it on Saturday, Sunday and Monday tentatively in the second week of July.

Most vehicles avail the flyover to reach the central business district after crossing Howrah Bridge.

The decision to restrict traffic movement on the flyover and the road on weekends has been taken considering the fact that it will minimise harassment of commuters. Only on Monday, it may cause a bit of a problem for the commuters. The police are trying their best to keep traffic movement normal by diverting Kolkata-bound vehicles through Strand Road.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who headed the meeting, said: "The task of carrying out the work of the East-West Metro project in congested areas like Brabourne Road is quite critical. We expect that the task gets completed smoothly. So we have principally agreed to temporarily shift the minibus stand at Dalhousie Square and the tram tracks. However, the bus service from the point will not get affected."

The minibus association has also agreed to the decision. The Metro authorities will be paying around Rs 11 crore to West Bengal Transport Corporation for shifting the tram tracks.

The site at Dalhousie Square will be handed over to the East-West Metro authorities after removing the tram tracks and bus stand within July 5.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will also help in removing the underground pipe and sewerage lines if needed.

As many as 12 buildings whave been identified residents of which have to be shifted for a few days when the tunneling work at a depth of 30 metre will be carried out.

Residents of two buildings will be shifted on July 6. The residents have agreed to cooperate and can return to their residences within the next 10 days after the work commences.
