Two persons were killed and another injured when an elephant ran amok in Cooch Behar on Sunday.
Police said the victims — Upen Burman (66) and Mahendra Roy (73) — were killed after they were trampled by an elephant. The injured, identified as Sanjay Roy, was admitted to hospital with severe injuries.
According to the locals, an elephant entered a maize field in the village after getting separated from its pack. In an attempt to save the crops, the victims attempted to send the elephant out of the land. Finding them armed with bamboo sticks and logs, the elephant chased and trampled them. Officers of the forest department went to the spot and rescued the victims. Upen and Mahendra were declared brought dead while Sanjay was admitted to the hospital.
In another similar incident, two elephants ran amok in villages at Sarenga in Bankura on Sunday morning. In both Cooch Behar and Bankura, the elephants damaged the crops, farms and houses.
