North 24 Parganas' district police arrested a person from the Bongaon Sub Divisional Hospital premises on charges of selling heroin — a highly addictive and illegal drug. The local people saw him selling the drug among the youth and middle-aged women sitting in the hospital premises and captured him there. The drug seller was beaten up by the local people and then was handed over to the police.

Police arrested the accused person, identified as Gouranga Adhikari, a resident of Bongaon. The investigators learnt that a drug peddler supplied two packs of heroin to Adhikari which he was selling in the areas. Police seized the packets and Rs 17,000 from the accused person. "Adhikari is only a small member of the gang. We are looking for the main members of the drug racket in this area," said an investigator.

It may be mentioned that police arrested a 25-year-old drug peddler and seized 700 gram of fine quality heroin from his possession at Basirhat in North 24 Parganas two years ago. Police got information that a resident of Basirhat, a peddler, would be coming from a red light area in Bongaon to deliver some packs of heroin to a buyer. Based on this information, the police team laid a trap at a place in Basirhat. A car was intercepted by the police and driver of the car, Sagar Samanta was arrested.

"We suspect that Gouranga Adhikari was connected to Sagar Samanta. The further investigation will reveal more details about this case," the investigator added.

It will be recalled that Barasat district court had ordered capital punishment to a person who was found guilty of supplying heroin in the area in 2016. The person was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of India.
