The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday arrested a person from Barasat in North 24 Paragnas on charges of practicing as a dentist without a proper medical degree.

The accused person, identified as one Sanjit Kumar Basu was practicing at a local dental clinic in Panchanan Market Complex on Barasat Station Road. The officers arrested him while he was issuing a prescription to a patient.

A senior officer of CID said that they conducted a raid at a chamber at Barasat on Thursday evening following a complaint by the registrar of West Bengal Dental Council. The council recently lodged complaint with the CID that a number of fake dental surgeons were practicing across the state.

"Basu admitted that he did not have the required qualification. The officers arrested him on charges of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy," a senior CID officer said.
The local residents recently lodged complaint against the accused person with the local forum of doctors. The local forum had informed the matter to the West Bengal Dental Council and requested them to inquire the matter.

"We have come to know that local residents faced a lot of problems while they had gone to Basu. They lodged a complaint with the local forum of doctors and requested them to take action against him. The doctor's forum approached to CID for the investigation," said a CID officer. It may be mentioned that the state CID has formed a Special Investigating Team (SIT) after the West Bengal Medical Council had declared that over 500 fake doctors are operating in different state-run and private hospitals across the state. The CID has already arrested six fake doctors who were attached to different state-run and noted private hospitals in the state.
