Rajib Banerjee, the state Irrigation minister, held meeting on Thursday with authorities of both East and West Burdwan to take adequate measures to avoid even flood-like situation in the districts.
The meeting was held in the office of Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA) in Durgapur in which district magistrates along with concerned officials from the districts were present. MLAs and ministers from the districts were also present in the meeting.
After assessing the situation and preparedness in the districts, Banerjee discussed with the district authorities about the plan of the Irrigation department to ensure better arrangements to avoid flood-like situation.
Banerjee said that all necessary steps are being taken to fight any odd situation.
Earlier, Banerjee held a meeting on June 5 with representatives of all the agencies that are involved with flood management including CWC, India Metrological Department (IMD), National Informatics Centre (NIC), BSNL and Webel to take a stock on the preparations ahead of the monsoon.
After the meeting, the issue of non-cooperation of the Central Water Commission (CWC) with the state in checking flood -like situation had come up. It was alleged that the CWC was not helping the state in getting details about rainfall and water in reservoirs in Bhutan. On the same day, Banerjee held meeting with district magistrates of Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas to take a stock of the situation.
Thursday's visit to East and West Burdwan was part of a programme of holding meetings separately with district magistrates of each of the flood-prone districts to take a stock of the situation and to know whether any further work needs to be done.
A round-the-clock control room has been opened to help people in case there is any flood-like situation. Officials of the state Irrigation department have already been engaged to keep a round-the -clock watch on the embankments in the flood-prone areas.
