Three Trinamool Congress workers were killed in two separate incidents in the state on Thursday night.
Asper Paik, a local Trinamool Congress worker was killed allegedly by some CPI(M) -backed criminals in South 24 Parganas' Diamond Harbour.
Shekh Lalchand and his brother Shekh Shahjahan, two Trinamool workers in Howrah were killed in the same night.
Police learnt that Paik was discussing the local issues with his party colleagues at a tea stall when somebody called him in his phone. He then hurriedly left the tea shop to go back to his home.
The assailants stopped him on his way back home and hacked him with a sickle. Later, the assailants shot him from point blank range to ensure his death.
The local residents and the Trinamool congress workers alleged that CPI(M)-backed criminals killed him.
"Paik was an active party worker and his connection with the local residents was excellent. He had worked hard during the previous elections and our party had won here convincingly. This made the local CPI(M) workers jealous," said a local resident. Meanwhile, CPI(M) did not make any comment.
It will be recalled that a Trinamool Congress leader was shot dead by four persons at Rashapunja in South 24 Parganas district in May this year. Ismail Pailan was shot and then was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Later, police arrested four persons in connection with the case.
In Howrah's Amta, criminals attacked two persons, Shekh Lalchand and his brother Shekh Shahjahan on Thursday night. Lalchand and Shahjahan were shot dead there.
"We have started an investigation. The bodies were sent for post-mortem. We will wait for the reports to come," said a police officer.
The officer also said that the criminals hurled bombs before they escaped from the spot.
