At least six persons were injured in a clash that broke out between CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress supporters in Kasba area on Sunday night.
The incident triggered tension in the area. Police have arrested 10 persons so far for creating trouble in the area. The local residents, however, alleged that members of the rival groups hurled bombs at each other. It has also been alleged that a few rounds of bullet were also fired. Police have, however, ruled out the possibility of a gun battle.
The trouble broke out at Ward number 91 under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation on Sunday night. The local people told the police that some houses were attacked by some group members. After being informed, the police reached the spot and pacified the mob. They had to resort to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.
The local CPI(M) leaders alleged that Trinamool Congress-backed goons attacked their party workers. They also alleged that police failed to take any steps against the Trinamool Congress men who created the problems. The Trinamool Congress leaders in the area, however, denied the allegation and blamed the CPI(M) activists for creating nuisance in the locality.
Police have not confirmed that the houses were attacked by the group members. Senior police officers reached the spot immediately after the incident. The police arrested around ten persons from the both the group for creating violence in the area. A police picket has been set up to prevent any untoward incidents.
Police are conducting raids to nab the other culprits. A detailed probe has been initiated in this connection.
