The Jadavpur University (Amendment) Bill 2017 was passed in the Assembly on Friday to create an additional post of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Pro V-C) in Jadavpur University.
Partha Chatterjee, the state Education minister, said in the Assembly: "With expansion of the university, the necessity of another Pro V-C for Jadavpur University was needed."
It may be mentioned that at present there is one Pro V-C in the varsity.

Chatterjee said: "Jadavpur University was established in 1955. There was no Pro V-C from 1955 to 2000. The academic and administrative responsibility is increasing with the expansion of the varsity. At present, there are 37 departments in Post Graduate section. There are around 7,208 Under-Graduate students and 3,441 Post Graduate students."

"The establishment of the varsity is increasing. The main campus is situated on 60 acre of land and there is another campus on 21.3 acre in Salt Lake. A new campus is coming up on an area of 8 acre. There are 850 sanctioned posts of teachers, 38 officers and 1,500 non teaching posts. Both Jadavpur University and Calcutta University undertake several international collaboration projects," he said, adding that this is the reason why the necessity of an additional Pro V-C was felt.

He said that the budget for the university is Rs 195 crore in 2016-17 fiscal. "It cannot be such that they will get Rs 195 crore and no one will ask that how the money was spent. The Executive Committee could look into the issue if there are any irregularities. Moreover, there are representatives of the state government as well to look into such issues."
