Parents of dead newborn stage protest with body

The family alleged that the victim’s mother was left unattended by nurses and doctors of the primary health centre where she was admitted after severe pain.;

Parents of a newborn baby who died of alleged medical negligence at a primary health centre in South 24-Parganas staged a demonstration in front of the local MLA's office and police station throughout Sunday night with their dead child in their hands, demanding action against the doctors and nurses, involved in the treatment of the baby.

It has been alleged that the mother of the newborn had also been subjected to physical assault by a section of staff members of Khuchitala block primary health centre where the woman was brought in on last Saturday. The incident has created a sensation in the area with the family members of the victim registering a compliant at Jibantala police station on the basis of which police have started a probe.

Prasenjit Karmakar, a resident of Bhabenerhat area under the same police station took his pregnant wife, Puja to the Khuchitala block primary health centre on Saturday after she felt pain in her stomach. The doctors in the primary health centre admitted the patient on Saturday night. The family members of the woman alleged that none of the nurses who were on duty came to her help when she complained of serious pain. She was literally left unattended on the bed of the health centre on Saturday night.

The family members of the victim has also accused that the nursing staff members rebuked the woman when she was wreathing in pain and beat her too. The distressed woman finally gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday morning. But it was alleged that the baby died soon after his birth. A family member of the woman alleged that they were told to take the baby to a city hospital where the baby could be treated in a better way. The family members acted as per the advice of the nursing staff members and the doctors of the primary health centre and took the baby and his mother to MR Bangur Hospital on Sunday evening where the infant was declared brought dead.

The family members alleged that the infant died due to the negligence of some doctors and nurses at the primary health centre. The bereaved mother and her husband refused to handover the baby to the police. They took the patient back to their village and staged a demonstration at the local police station and also in front of the house of the local MLA. 

Later, the senior police officers intervened and sent the baby's body for post-mortem after assuring the family members of proper steps against the accused if found guilty.
