Labourers found human skulls and several bones from the shore of River Kana on Monday morning in Hooghly district's Tarakeswar.

These labourers were working under the project of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme on the river bank while they spotted the bones.

Scared by the sight, the labourers informed the matter to the local panchayat members who called up the police to investigate the case.

"We found two slightly damaged skulls and some bone fragments from the spot. The labourers were digging a portion of the river bank when they spotted the bones and skulls," said police officer.

The officer also added that the police found two small pieces of cloths from the spot. "A piece of red cloth and another piece of white cloth were found from the spot along with bones," the officer said.

Meanwhile, police suspect that it was a case of human sacrifice. The bodies of the victims, wrapped with those cloths, were buried in the river bank. "We suspect that it is a case of human sacrifice. But we cannot confirm it in this stage of investigation," the officer said.

The officers from State Forensic Science Laboratory collected the samples and the district police initiated a case. "First we will study the recent missing dairies registered under different police stations," the officer said.

The local residents, however, alleged that criminal activities have gone up in this area. Police should be more vigilant to stop these crimes.

"It is really a serious incident that criminals buried bodies on the bank of the river. Police should increase the security of this area," some local residents opined.
