A 25-year-old youth was shot and then hacked to his death by some miscreants at Chanditala in North 24 Parganas Shyamnagar on Monday night.

Sujoy Haldar, the victim, a local Trinammol Congress worker was called up by some people when he was returning home. Police learnt that Haldar was shot from point blank range and then the killers hacked him with a sickle to confirm his death.

After initiating the investigation, police detained a local resident in connection with the case. One Banty Chakrabarty was detained by the police who gave some important clues to the investigators, police sources said. "We are presently interrogating Chakrabarty as he gave us some clues. But we cannot share other details of this case at this moment," said a police officer.

However, police sources revealed that the victim's mother lodged an FIR against some local youth. Chakrabarty's name appeared in the FIR, on the basis of which police detained him for interrogation. "Chakrabarty will be arrested soon as it is just a matter time," the source added.

"We really do not know that why Haldar was killed. He apparently had no enemies as residents of this area liked him," said Shambhu Hazra, a neighbour.

The investigators learnt that Haldar was taken to Chanditala crossing, where he was shot twice as he fell on the road. The assailants hacked him in different parts of his body to confirm his death.
The assailants quickly fled from the spot and Haldar's body was lying there in pool of blood. Police recovered a country made gun from the spot.
