Police have arrested an American national from Kolkata airport on charges of molesting a minor girl.
The accused, Anthony Paul Rozario (58) was arrested by the police while trying to board a flight to the USA at around 1.30 am on Monday night. An FIR was filed against the accused at Haridevpur police station. He has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the POSCO Act.
The family members of the victim had lodged a complaint with the police station on May 4.
The accused had allegedly molested a 7-year-old girl. After committing the crime, he had fled his rented house in the city where he was staying at the time. The police have come to know that the accused was trying to flee to his own country.
On the basis of certain information they had received, a team of officers from the Kolkata police visited the airport on Monday night. They arrested the accused on the basis of the girl's allegations when he reached the airport to take his flight.
It was learnt then that the accused works as a cook in the US. Police are now investigating the purpose of his visit to the city and have started a probe on the matter.
