A police van which was coming from a wrong direction, hit a motor bike on a flyover in front of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, claimed the lives of two persons on Saturday morning.
The eye-witnesses of the incident clearly indicated that the police van flouted the traffic rule and came from a wrong direction.
"The police vehicle was coming from Prem Baazar and the bike was going towards Hirdi. The driver of the police van lost its control over the steering wheel and hit the bike on the flyover. The bike rider and the person who
was riding pillion were taken to a hospital but they were declared brought dead," said a local source.
It may be mentioned that two persons were killed and several others were injured in a major road accident on National Highway 6 near Guptipara at Kharagpur on Friday evening. Saturday's incident came at a time when police were busy investigating the Friday's incident.
On Friday, police said after speaking to the local residents that a speeding truck hit several vehicles one after the other. It first hit a trailer and a pick up van. The driver in the truck seemingly fell unconscious soon after colliding with trailer and continued hitting a pick up van and some other vehicles. Police went to the spot and cut open the cabins of the vehicles to bring out the drivers. Both the drivers were declared dead when taken to the hospital.
"Both of the incidents will be investigated thoroughly," said a police officer.
