Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will take legal action against the director of National Library and the chief engineer of Central Public Works Department (CPWD) looking after the premier institution after mosquito larvae were found on the premises.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had instructed all the civic bodies to intensify anti-larvae drives to reduce the number of dengue cases.

It was decided to launch awareness campaign against larvae borne diseases at the administrative review meeting in east Burdwan on Monday. A team of Kolkata Municipal Corporation ( KMC) team led by Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh visited the National Library on Monday morning.

The water found at the underground drainage line is serving as the mosquito breeding ground. Books worth lakhs of rupees are getting destroyed due to clogging of the underground sewer line, Ghosh said.

He alleged that mosquito larvae were found in the accumulated water in the basement. There had been pockets from where garbage has not bee cleared. The KMC team which had workers from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department removed the garbage. Broken furniture had been piled up in front of the staff quarters.

Civic authorities have given notice asking them to clear the garbage and take proper action to destroy mosquito larvae within a week failing which the authorities will file case in the municipal court. The court may slap fine upto Rs 1 lakh for not taking adequate measures to destroy larvae.

Ghosh, who visited the SSKM hospital, expressed satisfaction over the measures taken by the hospital authorities to combat the spread of dengue.

Six teams, comprising doctors, para medical staffs and KMC workers of the SWM department and state health department have been formed to look over the anti-larvae drives.

The hospital is serving as the model of cleanliness for all super-specialty hospitals.
