Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will conduct health audit of all properties owned by it. The decision was taken in a high-level meeting of the civic body on Friday, chaired by Member Mayor-in-Council (Parks & Gardens) Debasish Kumar. The move comes in the wake of Majerhat bridge collapse on Tuesday late afternoon.
"We have decided to conduct a health audit of all our buildings that include schools, markets, foot overbridges, health units, borough offices etc. The pay and use toilets maintained by us will also come under the purview of the health audit. We want to ensure safety and security of all citizens," said Kumar.
Kumar instructed the departmental director generals (DGs) to take necessary steps in this regard and accordingly chalk out a plan of action on how different departments will proceed with their work. "We will form a dedicated team with our available workforce and the team will form groups and conduct a survey of the buildings. They will share the daily report with us," a departmental DG said.
It may be mentioned that a number of KMC school buildings, particularly in North Kolkata, are very old. In case of some schools, parents have expressed their apprehension about the safety of their children and requested the school authorities to take up repair work immediately.
A number of market maintained by the civic body have also not undergone a thorough examination of their health for quite a long time. There have been incidents of caving in and sellers in the market have also suffered minor injuries on one or two occasions. The condition of some of the pay and use toilets are also pitiful due to lack of maintenance.
