Kolkata: Now, listen to your favorite songs as you shop at a municipal market in your locality.
In a unique move, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to install music systems at the municipal markets across the city.
The move kicks off on Saturday with the installation of such systems in two markets at New Alipore in South Kolkata.
The two markets are — Bholanath Basu market and Dr Debopriyo Bose market — situated at ward 118 in which Member Mayor in Council (Sewerage & Drainage) Tarak Singh is the councillor.
"Both these markets are very old. Recently, the market department of KMC has taken up renovation works of these two markets. I gave them the proposal to introduce something unique in the form of music and they readily agreed.
The markets are open both in the morning and evening. I am hopeful that people will enjoy their shopping while listening to both Bengali and Hindi songs of noted singers ranging from Rabindra Sangeet, modern songs etc. Music has a soothing effect and act as a rejuvenation for stressed minds," Singh said.
More than 60 businessmen earn their living from these two markets that have vegetables, fish and meat and also a variety
of grocery items.
Member, Mayor-in-Council (Market) Amiruddin Bobby said: "We will have arrangements of making some important announcements on behalf of KMC at the markets with this music systems. Gradually, we will have these facilities at all the
municipal markets."
A senior official of the department said there will be announcements urging people to bring bags for shopping and shun the use of plastic as well.
