Integrated control room, changing units for pilgrims

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) along with Kolkata Police will set up an integrated control room in the transit camp area of Babughat to keep a track on the weather conditions, tidal developments and most importantly, keep a tab on the movement of the pilgrims during their journey from Kolkata to Gangasagar.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday held a high-level meeting with Kolkata Police officials and other stakeholders regarding the arrangements for the Gangasagar pilgrims while they put up at the camps near Babughat before going for the holy dip at Gangasagar.

"We are coming up with changing room facilities for women at all the four adjacent ghats (banks) near Babughat for the benefit of the pilgrims. We will also put up facilities of public address system in the area so that announcements can be made immediately if someone gets estranged from his or her family members," Hakim added.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, recently chaired a meeting regarding the preparations for the Gangasagar

Mela at Nabanna, where she made it clear that there should best possible arrangements made.

The KMC is also

increasing facilities of bio-toilets in the area and the police will set up a temporary outpost for providing assistance to the pilgrims.

"For the first time this year, we will have a dedicated surveillance for the safety of luggage of the pilgrims at the cloak room in the area. The move is to prevent any sort of theft," Hakim opined.
