Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) in Purulia has formed an inquiry committee to probe into the alleged medical negligence in which two elderly persons allegedly lost vision after cataract surgeries were conducted on them by a private nursing home in Jhalda.
It was learnt that the district health officials have also issued show-cause notice to the private nursing home, Maa Annapurna Seva Sadan. If the private nursing homes fail to provide any satisfactory, answer its license may be cancelled. Action would be taken against the doctors if they were found guilty.
The district administrations are also making necessary arrangements to treat the two victims in any of the state-run medical colleges of the state. The local residents have alleged that some touts have been operating from the nursing home who bring in patients who need cataract surgery to be done to the nursing home as they get around Rs 6,000 against each patient.
They alleged that a major portion of the fund provided to the nursing home both by the Centre and the state government was being taken by the touts as commission for brining the patients to the nursing home.
After the matter came to light, the touts were allegedly trying to pressurise the victims and their family members to remain tight-lipped in this regard. It was learnt that one of the victims, Manahar Barui, a local resident and an elderly man was taken to the nursing home for cataract surgery. The doctors there carried out the surgery. It has been alleged that the victim lost his vision after the surgery.
Family members of the victims also alleged that apart from the touts, some staff members of the nursing home were also involved in this nexus.
The accused were allegedly pocketing a huge portion of funds received by the nursing home under various health schemes from the state government and the Centre.
The district health officials have started a detailed probe into the incident and steps would be taken against the accused on the basis of the report submitted by the inquiry committee.
