A high-level meeting was held between senior officials of Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) and their counterparts in various Central and state government agencies to discuss the progress of construction at their sites.
It was chaired by Debashis Sen, chairman of HIDCO. The Chief of Staff, Coast Guard was also present at the meeting. The regional passport officer and the secretary, state health and family welfare department and senior officials of CPWD, BSNL, EPFO, Central Forensic Laboratory also attended the meeting.
Over a dozen Central and state government offices are coming up in New Town and construction of these offices are in different stages. Some offices have just received the plots while some others have floated tenders to rope in construction firms. Some have put up boundary walls while in many others construction is being carried out in full swing.
A second campus of Presidency University is coming up in full swing. Once completed, New Town will be the hub of state and Central government offices.
The important office buildings that are being constructed in New Town belong to the Coast Guard, regional passport office, central forensic laboratory, state health and family welfare department, CPWD, DVC, IFFCO, DRDO, RITES, WBSEDCL, WBSETCL, WBPDCL, NTECSC, Nagaland government, Balurghat municipality, Murshidabad Zilla Parishad, state Consumer Affairs department and Mayel Lyang Lepcha Board.
The senior officials assured that the constructions would be completed on time.
HIDCO is now busy constructing infrastructure and experts have been engaged to prepare plans for traffic management and solid waste management. Steps have already been taken to increase the green cover of the township which is being built as a green city. It may be mentioned that New Town is also coming up as a medical and educational hub.
By 2020, New Town will get a new look and will be the major destination for residential and commercial activities.
