The School Education department will repair the building of Niladevi Memorial School in Baguiati which was damaged by a builder intending to set up an apartment there, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday.
Banerjee announced Rs 5 lakh to repair the building of the school which will be provided from the MP LAD fund.
She was addressing a gathering in connection with the felicitation of eminent sports personalities and distribution of grants at Netaji Indoor stadium on Monday. The programme was organised by the Youth Services and Sports department.
The incident at Baguiati took place on Saturday when a local builder Mijanur Rahaman damaged a school to make room for an apartment there. He was arrested along with three others who were remanded to police custody. The builder and his henchmen beat up the headmaster and kept the main entrance of the school under lock and key. They also destroyed a portion of the school building.
Referring to the incident, the Chief Minister said she had instructed the School Education department to repair the school building. Expressing her shock over the incident, she said that the state government will not tolerate such incidents. "What does the builder think of himself? Can a school building be pulled down to make room for an apartment? This can never be tolerated. The builder should control his greed," said Banerjee.
Banerjee said it was her challenge to put an end to the politics of destruction. Coming down heavily on CPI(M) she said: "You have not done anything in the past 34 years and when we are trying to smoothen things, don't try to spoil it. You were busy in destroying things and had forgotten to construct. We should be positive and it is my challenge to put an end to the politics of destruction." She said: "Election is held once in five years and you should learn to accept the verdict of people. Enough is enough, I will not tolerate anything that goes against the interest of Bengal."
The Chief Minister said that there is no place for anti-social activities in Bengal and urged the younger generation to come forward and stand by the people who had been duped by others and protest against anti-social activities.
Meanwhile, classes were held by the teachers of Niladevi Memorial School. The students came with their parents. The police have put up tarpaulin sheets to facilitate make shift classrooms. The teachers said cooperation by North 24 Parganas' district administration and police had helped the parents and guardians of the students to regain courage.
The district administration had assured every cooperation. Senior police officers were present when the classes started at 7 am and it continued till 10 am. The assurance by the Chief Minister to repair the school building would give further courage to the teachers and the guardians.
