'Fourth internal injury undetected by hospital may have lead to Sanjay's death'

The inquiry committee constituted by the state Health department to probe into the negligence in treatment of Sanjay Roy has found serious lapses by the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital.

In the course of the investigation, the committee came to know that the doctors at the private hospitals mentioned in the medical report that there were three internal injuries in the body of the victim who was taken to the hospital following a critical road injury.

The report that was submitted to the Chief Minister by the state Health department mentions that there were four internal injuries that the victim had received at the time of the road accident. The post-mortem report has also confirmed that the victim had four deep injury marks in various parts of his body. But the doctors in the hospital did not mention about an internal injury which might have led to the death of the victim.

It is believed that the injury that remained undetected by the hospital despite a series of tests performed on the patient, continued to bleed and eventually led to his death. The doctors at the SSKM Hospital told the members of the inquiry committee that the patient was bleeding from inside when he was taken to the state-run hospital from Apollo Gleneagles Hospital. They also told the committee that the patient died of excessive bleeding.

Now question here arises how a super speciality hospital like Apollo Gleneagles could not detect the injury in a patient despite of charging his relatives arbitrarily. The report also hinted that hospital authorities made an excessive bill not in right proportion with the treatment and facilities the patient was provided with.

The report submitted to the Chief Minister on the alleged delay in transferring patient to the SSKM Hospital by this private hospital also speaks about some irregularities by the hospital.

Meanwhile, the investigating officers on Saturday interrogated 16 people from Apollo Gleneagles Hospital including 10 doctors who were asked to appear at the Phoolbagan police station. It may be mentioned that the police are conducting a separate probe into the incident on the basis of the complaint lodged by Ruby Roy, Sanjay's widow.
