Kolkata: Murshidabad police have seized fake currency notes of nearly Rs 3 lakh from the bordering areas of Samserganj on Monday night and arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in smuggling fake currencies.
The currencies were in denominations of Rs 2,000 notes. Acting on a tip off, the police detained the suspects on Monday night and recovered the fake Rs 2,000 notes from him.
According to police, the accused were arrested from Dhulian More when they were trying to smuggle the fake currencies into the state.
The accused are Kabirul Mia, Sadikul Seikh and Arif Seikh. They are all residents of Shovapur of vaishnabghata in Malda. Police suspect that the accused are a part of international smuggling racket.
Police had specific information that there might be a smuggling attempt. They managed to seize the fake currencies when the accused assembled at Dhulian More.
Police suspect that the fake notes were being smuggled into the country from Bangladesh through districts like Malda and Murshidabad.
Dhulian area of Samsergunj has become a corridor for smuggling of fake currency notes.
Police in the two districts have become more vigilant as a result of these episodes and people involved in the smuggling of fake currency are being arrested at regular intervals.
