Explain interview process of civic volunteers: HC to state

Calcutta High Court asked the state government to explain the process of interviews to recruit civic volunteers on Tuesday. The court specifically wanted to know, in what basis, those civic volunteers were recruited.

The division Bench of acting Chief Justice Nishita Mhatre asked the Advocate General of state government Kishor Dutta, whether the marksheets of Madhyamik examination, age proofs and NCC certificates were checked.

The Advocate General replied that the transparency was maintained during the recruitment. Those were only some unsuccessful candidates who spread the canards. They were trying to malign the government. The court heard the case and would give the verdict later.

It may be mentioned that in an interim direction, Calcutta High Court extended the tenure of civic volunteers till February 15.

Earlier, the High Court had directed the state government to cancel the appointment of civic volunteers in Barikul and Sarenga police station areas in Bankura district. The court had described the process of appointment as "a sham with systematic malice."

Challenging the direction of single Bench, the state government had appealed in the division Bench. The division Bench, constituted by Acting Chief Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, extended the tenure of civic volunteers till February 15.

The state government was earlier directed by the High Court to form a three-member committee headed by the state finance secretary to prepare fresh guidelines for the recruitment examination which will have 80 per cent objective questions and 20 per cent subjective ones.

The committee was asked to submit its report to the chief secretary Basudeb Banerjee. The state was also asked to start the recruitment after setting up of new rules. The court directed to keep all the documents in an archive for future references.
