Mystery shrouds the death of an engineering student whose body was found by the railway tracks near Mecheda station under Kolaghat police station in East Midnapore.
The incident triggered tension in the area. Police said that Subhajit Singha Dey, a resident of Jhalda in Purulia had been studying electrical engineering from a private engineering college in Kolaghat. It was also learnt that the victim performed badly in a recent examination, following which, he had been suffering from frustration. Police suspect that the victim might have committed suicide following his poor performance in the examination. The investigation officer is not, however, ruling out the possibility of foulplay behind the incident.
Subhajit had gone missing from Saturday night. The family members of the victim conducted a search in various places but did not get a trace of the victim. They also rang up some of his relatives' house to confirm if he had gone there. But the relatives told the family members that Subhajit did not visit their places. On early Sunday morning, local people spotted his body lying near the railway track near Mecheda. After being informed, the Government Railway Police (GRP) reached the spot and recovered the body. It was sent for post-mortem.
According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the victim committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a running train. The nature of the injuries on victim's body also suggest that he was run over by a train. Police are not ,however, ready to come to a conclusion and are waiting for the post-mortem report which would throw light on his death.
The family members of the victim told the police during interrogation that he had been suffering from mental depression after he obtained poor marks in an examination. He was not talking to his family members after the result was published. Police are investigating if the victim committed suicide following mental depression. They are also not ruling out any other angle into his death. Police have started a probe in this connection. They interrogated some of his friends in this regard.
