Kolkata: Vocalist and Rabindrasangeet exponent Dwijen Mukhopadhyay died at his Salt Lake residence on Monday. He was 91. His mortal remains will be kept at Rabindra Sadan for people to pay their last respects. He will be cremated with full state honours.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went to Rabindra Sadan and paid her respects. Banerjee, who had cordial relations with Mukhopadhyay, was shocked to hear the news of his death. She tweeted: "I am at a loss for words. Dwijen Da (Mukherjee) is no more. End of an era. Huge loss for the music industry of #Bangla. This is also a personal loss. We had felicitated him with 'Banga Bibhushan' award in 2011. Condolences to his family and fans."
Mukhopadhyay had sung more than 1,500 songs, of which 800 were Rabindrasangeets. He had taken training in music from Sunil Lahiri and later from great Rabindrasangeet exponents like Pankaj Mullick, Anadi Ghoshdastidar, Santosh Sengupta, Shantideb Ghosh and Niharendu Sen.
Mukhopadhyay got the Padbibhusan award in 2010 and also got an award from Sangeet Natak Akademi. He got Bangabhusan in 2011 and Sangeet Mahasamman in 2012 by the state government.
