The death toll due to the flood in the state jumped to 34 on Sunday. The overall situation, however, has improved with the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) reducing the quantum of the release of water from its barrages.
According to sources, the DVC on Sunday released around 50,000 cusec water. In many parts of the flood-affected districts, the water level started receding but the villagers are getting affected with water borne diseases. People at Muraroi, Dubrajpur were down with Diarrhea and nearly a hundred villagers from Habibpur village in Birbhum have been admitted to the hospital with nausea and vomiting. Around 20 villagers from ward number 6 and 7 in Dubrajpur were also admitted to the hospital.
The doctors have advised the people in the flood affected areas to drink boiled water to check any such incidents. They also advised them to sleep inside mosquito nets as there is a possibility of being attacked by malaria carrying mosquitoes. The villagers are also advised to consult a doctor if they are suffering from fever. Vast parts of Ghatal, Daspur and Chandrakona are still under water. Local MP and film star Dev on Sunday visited the affected areas of Ghatal and inspected the situation. He also held a meeting at the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer at Ghatal with the senior administrative officials and discussed the repairs of the damaged portion of the river embankments. It may be mentioned that the situation deteriorated after the flood following the collapse of the embankments of Silabati river. The villagers have no other options other than spending their time in the relief camps. Many villages of Chandrakona are also inundated. Relief materials are being delivered to the affected areas by the administration with the help of boats. The situation in some parts of Bankura continues to be grim.
Dev to take up Ghatal flood issue in LS
