Kolkata: A person was allegedly assaulted, undressed and then forced out of a restaurant at China Town on Saturday night after he failed to cough up the food bill. The incident took place at Fung Fa bar cum restaurant situated on Mateswartala Road under Pragati Maidan police station near the Milan Mela grounds.
Police have arrested two persons including the owner of the restaurant in this connection.
It is learnt that the victim Debashis Chakraborty, a resident of Beliaghata had entered the restaurant at around 6 pm in the evening and while paying the bill, found out that he was not carrying his wallet.
Chakraborty is a frequenter at the restaurant and informed the matter to the restaurant owner Lichuan Chan.
However, the latter insisted that he would not be permitted to get out of the restaurant unless he cough up the bill of Rs 1500.
Chakraborty then suggested that an employee of the restaurant should accompany him to his Belighata home, which is only a few kilometers away from the spot and take the amount of the bill.
However, Chan refused and he along with an employee of his restaurant Subrata Das physically assaulted the complaint and committed public nuisance and obscene act by undressing him infront of the customers in the restaurant.
Chakrabroty was then driven out of the restaurant in naked condition and was rescued by the police who brought him to the Pragati Maidan police station.
Chakraborty lodged a complaint and the duo-Chan and Das were arrested.
According to police sources, Chan is a resident of Mateswartala Road while Das hails from Pulin Khatik Road under Tangra police station area.
Sources in the restaurant said the complainant has quite a reasonable amount of dues in the restaurant and this was the reason behind the owner's persistence in this regard.
"The act of the restaurant is inhuman and unjustified. There are other means that he could have adopted when Chakraborty could not cough up the bill. He could have called the police. However, he has not acted in the right way by taking the law in his own hand," an advocate of Calcutta High Court said.
