Kolkata: Calcutta University is all set to introduce semester system as an integral part of choice-based-credit-system (CBCS) in the undergraduate humanities and science stream.
The students taking admissions in colleges affiliated to the varsity starting from the academic year 2018-2019 in the Undergraduate (UG) courses will be registered under the new format. The CBCS was introduced in BCom last year.
The decision for evaluation of the students under the semester examination pattern was ratified by the CU syndicate - the highest decision making body in the varsity on Monday.
A senior official of the varsity present in the syndicate meeting said with the introduction of CBCS, students in both the streams will now be able to elect a paper across a variety of disciplines. The examination will now be on grade points and students score sheet will be on 10 point grade scale.
There will not be any mention of marks.
Combining all semesters, an honours student has to appear for 140 credit points in three years across 6 semesters.
In general, a student needs to appear on 120 credit points. To graduate in six semesters, an honours candidate needs to secure Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) 4.000 and general student needs to bag 3.000 CGPA.
CU Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakrabarti Banerjee said students of both honours and general degree courses will be registered under the semester exam and CBCS.
"A student enrolled for a particular course will have to complete the course within five years. After five years, it will be determined if the candidate has successfully completed the course or has failed. Therefore, no students will be detained in any semester," she added.
The students will have the opportunity to review or upgrade in the new format.
"In case of review, a student can demand a reevaluation of their answer scripts and see themselves.
For upgrade or reexamination, a candidate will be allowed to reappear in any paper in which they have failed," a CU official said adding that in CBCS, students will be allotted 10 marks for attendance and 10 marks for internal assessment in each paper.
