Kolkata: A couple was found dead in their house at Shanti Park in Narendrapur on Wednesday morning.
Preliminary investigation by the police hinted that Sankar Biswas (50) could have killed his wife Gita Rani and then committed suicide.
A police officer said the door of the couple's residence was found locked from inside till 8.30 am in the morning. When their neighbours knocked
on the doors nobody responded.
One of them peeped through the window and saw Sankar hanging from the ceiling.
They informed the couple's daughter who lives nearby and they broke open the door to find Gita Rani lying dead on the floor and Shankar hanging from the ceiling.
Police reached the spot and removed the bodies and them for post mortem.
It is learnt that the couple would often quarrel among themselves as both of them suspected each other of having extra-marital affairs.
They quarrelled on Tuesday night and some of their relatives had to intervene to stop them.
They left in the midnight and neighbours informed the police that they had heard noises of them having an argument with each other and also some groaning sounds at night. One of them said he saw Shankar loitering in front of house late in the night.
"We did not intervene late in the night as it was their personal matter and we have become accustomed to it," a neighbour said.
The daughter of the couple told the sleuths that her father killed her mother and then committed suicide.
"We are exploring all angles. The post mortem will ascertain the cause of death," a senior official of the Narendrapur police station said.
