Police sealed the chamber of a fake doctor at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas on Thursday.
After receiving a complaint from a patient, policemen from Baruipur police station went to the doctor's chamber. But the accused doctor Rashid Chowdhury came to know beforehand that the cops were going to raid his chamber and fled the place.
Police said that the accused had been practising in a chamber on the ground floor of his house at Baruipur. He used to claim himself to be an expert in treating diabetes. On Thursday morning, a local youth went to the doctor. Following certain discussions, the youth asked the doctor to show him his certificate that allows him to practice. Chowdhury had failed to provide any valid documents and it led to suspicion. The youth went to the police station and lodged a complaint with the police.
The doctor had somehow come to know that the police were heading towards his residence. By that time, some more patients had started turning up at his chamber. He told the patients and their family members that he was going to the nursing home to attend an emergency patient and fled the spot. The police, however, sealed his chamber and initiated a search for the accused.
Local people were shell shocked knowing that he was a fake doctor. A large section of the people from the locality used to take medicines following his advice. The locals told the police that they had never doubted and at least 20 to 25 patients used to visit his chamber every day. The police initiated a probe in this connection and are trying to find out the nursing home with which he was attached.
