A private car on Tuesday went on a literal rampage after it flouted a traffic signal, entered a wrong lane, hit four vehicles that came in its way and injured at least
seven persons, including its own driver.
The injured were taken to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Reportedly, some of the victims were critically injured including the driver of the private car.
Police learnt that the car was rushing towards Salt Lake in a breakneck speed. A cycle-van which was going towards Ultadanga was the first victim of the accident. The car directly hit the cycle-van. The van-puller received injuries and was lying on the roadside. The driver could not stop his vehicle there.
It again collided with a motorbike and injured the biker. The car did not stop here too and further collided with an auto-rickshaw. Due to the impact of the accident, the passengers inside the auto fell outside. After that, the car had a head-on collision with a private bus of route 215A when it finally came to a halt.
The driver of the car received injuries on his head and back that looked most critical among the ones injured.
"He seemed to be an inebriated man driving the car. The car rushed from Ultadanga end and was coming towards Salt Lake," said an eye-witness.
"It was almost like a flick. The car hit the four vehicles coming from Salt Lake and going towards Ultadanga. The injured people were lying on the roadside and we took them to the hospital with the help of police," said another eye-witness.
Cops said that the driver behind Tuesday's mayhem has been admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and further action against him will be taken after he recovers.
Meanwhile, in another incident, a motor cyclist collided with a road divider on Tuesday morning at Jodurberia, Uluberia on the National Highway 6. He succumbed to his injuries there.
Police said, Bhaskar Das, the biker was trying to exhibit his biking skills to some of his friends. But he lost control and collided with the divider. He was taken to a hospital but was declared brought dead. Some of his friends were injured too in the incident.
