A woman who was riding pillion on a motorbike was mowed down when two private buses were racing each other to pick up passengers hit them in Salk Lake on Wednesday.
The incident took place near BD bus stand at around 7 am on Wednesday when Sonali Dey (35) was returning home after dropping her son at school. Police said that the victim was returning home on a bike with another person whose child also studied in the same school. The rider was also injured in the incident.
The incident triggered tension in the area with the local people staging demonstration protesting against rash driving of the vehicles in Salt Lake. The accused bus driver fled the spot immediately after the incident.
Eyewitnesses said that woman was riding pillion when the bike somehow came between two speeding buses. Local people told the police that a bus of route 215 was racing with another bus of route 201 when the bike was hit by one of the vehicles. Both the riders fell on the road and the woman was crushed under the wheels. The other person received serious injuries. The incident led to traffic congestion in the area. Senior police officers reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The local residents rushed to the spot and rushed them to a nearby private hospital where the woman was declared brought dead. The condition of the other person is stated to be critical.
An irate mob staged protest at the place of the accident alleging the accidents often take place in Salt Lake due to rash driving of buses and that there is no proper traffic management in the area. They said that the matter was informed to the local Councillor but no steps have been taken.
Police were conducting raids to nab the drivers who fled the spot along with the vehicles. The body has been sent for the post-mortem.
