Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has chalked out an elaborate programme to combat mosquito-borne diseases.
It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked all the civic bodies to take up anti-larvae drives to combat malaria and dengue. The spread of dengue has become a major concern for all the states throughout the country.
Rapid Action teams comprising workers of conservancy, health and environment departments have been set up to carry out anti-larvae drives on a war-footing. The teams will be headed by the members, Mayor-in-Council health, conservancy and environment departments.
BMC has started massive campaign to create awareness about the dos and don'ts. The civic body has put up banners and boards as part of the awareness drive along with distribution of pamphlets.
Pranay Roy, member, Mayor-In-Council (health) said two control rooms have been set up at Poura Bhavan in Bidhannagar and in Borough II in Rajarhat. In 27 wards in Rajarhat, eight health workers per ward have been engaged for the anti-larvae drive which include spraying mosquito repellants in every house and there is a proposal to procure fogging machine for the wards.
BMC is using boats to spray mosquito repellants in Bagjola, Kestopur and Eastern drainage canals. Blood tests can be done free of cost at Vidyasagar Matri Sadan, Deshbandhunagar Matri Sadan and Bidhannagar Matri Sadan.
Roy said people should cooperate with the civic body to make the anti-larvae drives a success and should follow the dos and don'ts strictly. He urged people to use mosquito nets and to clean the containers where water is stored at least once a week. The underground reservoirs and overhead tanks should be properly covered. Even the water stored in flower pots and vases should be cleaned at least once a week.
