Bird sanctuary to be upgraded with money raised from exhibition

In a unique gesture, the sale proceeds from an exhibition on wildlife photography and paintings will be donated to upgrade the bird sanctuary at Purbasthali in Burdwan.

The exhibition entitled Paintography was inaugurated by Debashis Kumar, member, mayor-in-council (parks), Kolkata Municipal Corporation at Nazrul Tirtha last week. It will remain open till March 2. VK Yadav, principal chief conservator of forest, Debashis Sen, chairman Housing Infrastructure development Corporation (HIDCO) and Babulal Mahato, district Panchayat and Rural Development Officer, were present at the inaugural function.

More than 100 wildlife photographs and paintings on birds were on display. Snaps clicked by the budding wildlife photographers and the well known ones were exhibited.

Reshmi Chatterjee, curator of Halo Heritage, said the sale proceeds would be donated to set up a watch tower in Purbasthali in Burdwan. There has been a demand to set up an eco tourism centre at Chupichar where thousands of migratory and local birds come every year. The bird sanctuary at Purbasthali would be upgraded.

It may be recalled that after coming to power in 2011, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee supported holding of fairs where foreign birds like Macao and Cockatoo are displayed. The first fair was organized by Mala Roy, chairperson of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in south Kolkata. Now, such fairs are held in central and north Kolkata and Salt Lake and are visited by hundreds of people. Thousands of people visit Santragachi Jheel to watch migratory birds in winter.

VK Yadav said the interest to conserve nature and watch birds was on the rise. Many young adults have shown keen interest in wildlife photography and are visiting remote areas as well. He congratulated Halo Heritage for taking up such a venture.
