Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital (BSMCH) authorities on Wednesday formed a 5-member inquiry committee to probe into the alleged allegation of negligence that led to the amputation of a leg of a newborn baby who was given birth at the hospital on January 6.

After conducting a detailed inquiry, the committee will submit a full report to the BSMCH authorities on this incident on the basis of which action would be taken against those found guilty. The family members of the victim

have also lodged a complaint at the local police station demanding compensation from the BSMCH.

It was learnt that Kaushalya Mondal from Kendrashayar village under Chhatna Police Station Bankura was admitted to BSMCH on January 4.

She delivered a baby boy two days after her admission. The family members of the patient said that the baby was born with a bowed right leg.

The mother was later released from the hospital along with her baby. Kaushalya and her relatives took the patient to the hospital on January 18 when some doctors attended to the baby and bandaged his leg.

The doctors also advised the mother to remove the bandage after seven days. Within two days after the baby was taken back home, the baby had severe pain on his right leg. Unable to bear the pain, he started screaming at the top of his voice. He was again brought back to the emergency ward of the hospital.

The baby had been admitted and kept in the hospital for three days. When the doctors removed the bandage, they found that the leg had become infected. On January 26, the baby was brought to the NRS Medical College and Hospital. Having found no way, the doctors at the NRS had to amputate his right leg.

Police have started a case in this regard after receiving complaint from the family members of the victim.

The hospital has also started an independent inquiry into the incident. The inquiry committee has been asked to submit a preliminary investigation within 5 days.
