42-year-old dies in yet another accident on NH-2; Burdwan cops intensify checks to curb incidents
A 42-year-old man died in a road accident that took place near Rathtala area on National Highway-2 on Tuesday morning. It is the same area where seven members of a family were killed in a tragic accident just six days ago when a tanker carrying road building tar overturned on the car they were travelling in.
Seikh Mehbool (42), a tractor driver from Galsi area in Burdwan was killed when a loaded dumper hit the tractor near Rathtala on National Highway 2. The local people told the police that the dumper which was at top speed hit the tractor. The tractor driver was declared brought dead after being taken to a hospital.
Burdwan police intensified checking after road accidents claimed as many as ten lives in the past five days. The senior police officers of the district on Monday night conducted a rigorous check at the Palsit toll plaza in Burdwan and imposed spot fines on the vehicles that were found to have flouted traffic norms. According to a senior police officer in the district, surprise checks would be conducted on the National Highway 2 from time-to-time to check the number of accidents.
Six days ago, Rajen Kumar, an RPF inspector and his six family members including three children died in the accident. On Monday night the top police officers in the district conducted the check and slapped fines on the people who flouted traffic norms. The officials checked if the drivers and the passengers travelling in the front seat wore seat belts.
The cars that were found to be over-speeding were also intercepted by the police and fined. The cars fitted with beacon lights were also not spared. It may be mentioned that Bengali folk singer Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya died in a road accident that took place at Palsit in Burdwan district on March 7. The accident happened when the SUV he was travelling in was hit from behind by a truck on NH 2 and fell into a shallow waterbody.
