Three persons were killed in two separate road accidents in the state on Sunday.
The first incident took place at Joyrampur area of Canning in South 24 Parganas when a school student died after being hit by a loaded truck.
The incident had triggered tension in the area after the local residents put up demonstration on the road protesting against the rash driving of the vehicles.
An altercation broke out between the police and the local residents. The demonstration was lifted after the police assured the local people that the driver of the truck would be arrested soon.
Police said that Mahidul Mollah was returning home after attending private tuition when the speeding truck hit him.
Local people rushed the victim to Canning sub-divisional hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The local residents alleged that despite of the repeated pleas, the police do not take action against some vehicles that often flout traffic norms.
They also alleged that some trucks carry soil illegally from one place to another.
But the police failed to take any steps against these illegal trucks. Police have, however, assured the local people that a probe has been initiated in this connection and raids are being conducted to nab the driver.
In another incident, a father and his daughter died in an accident which took place at Pundibari area of Cooch Behar on Sunday morning.
The father identified as Pijush Biswas died on the spot while his daughter Priyatama Biswas was declared brought dead by the doctors after being taken to Cooch Behar MJN Hospital.
Police said that the victims were going to a local market on a bicycle when a speeding truck hit them from behind on National Highway 31.
It was learnt that the mishap occurred when the truck was trying to overtake another truck.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and mowed down the two victims.
The driver has fled the spot along with the vehicle immediately after the accident.
The incident had triggered tension in the area.
The local people also staged some protest demonstration in the area demanding the arrest of the accused driver.
Police have started and raid to arrest the driver.
