Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a 21-year-old footballer whose body was found beside the railway tracks near Serampore railway station in Hooghly on Saturday morning.
Though the victim's family members claimed it to be a murder, police are yet to ascertain whether any accident had led to his death or if there is any foul play behind it. Police said the victim, Snehashis Dasgupta, used to play as a goalkeeper for the football team of Kolkata Port Trust. But he couldn't play in the current season due to a leg injury. The victim's family members told the police that Snehashis had a quarrel with some of his friends at around 1.30 a.m. on September 30. Though they are not confirmed about the reason behind the heated exchange of words, his family members suspect that they had a fight over pandal hopping. They told to the police that the victim's friends had taken him inside his house and asked him not to come out again. Later, the victim's friends returned at around 2.30 am and allegedly beat him up.
The accused then fled the house apprehending getting caught when they found some local people approaching the house.
Local people had departed after finding Snehashis in his house and tasked him not to keep any connection with the youth any more.
Later, early in the morning, police informed the Snehasis's family members that his body was found beside the railway track near Serampore railway station.
His family members identified the body which has been sent for an autopsy.
Police later went to the victim's house to probe the incident. They found a blood stained shirt in a room of the victim's house and blood stains were also found on a portion of a wall of the same room.
