In a tragic incident, a 19-year-old girl committed suicide due to an argument with her brother over a headphone. The incident took place at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas on Sunday morning.
Police said that the victim, Aparna Roy, was a first year student in Baruipur College.
A police officer said that Aparna and her brother Soumitra were busy with their studies in two separate rooms. All of a sudden Soumitra, who studies in Class XII, went to his sister and took away the headphone which she was using.
It led to a quarrel between them, which their family considered to be quite normal because the siblings often used to quarrel. But there was nothing as such that forced Aparna to commit suicide, a family member told the police. Both did not speak to each other for around an hour after the heated exchange of words.
Later, the girl's family members found the door of her room closed from inside. Aparna did not respond despite repeated knocks on the door. Hearing the cries of her family members, some local people came in and broke open the door to find her body hanging from the ceiling fan. They brought the body down and took her to Baruipur Sub-divisional Hospital where she was declared brought dead. The police sent the body for an autopsy. Though no complaint was lodged by the family members with the police, a police officer said that they will be speaking to the victim's family members to ascertain whether there was any other reason behind her death.
According to psychiatrist, it could be an outcome of a depressed state of mind. It could be possible that Aparna was depressed for certain reasons which she did not disclose to her parents and on Sunday morning she took the extreme step following the quarrel with her brother. There could be something else as well behind the incident, though it predominantly seems that she committed suicide just because of exchange of heated words with her brother over the headphone.
