Ten policemen including lady constables were injured following a scuffle between them and SFI and DYFI supporters at Esplanade on Thursday afternoon.
The injured police personnel were taken to SSKM hospital where they were treated.
The SFI and DYFI leaders alleged that many of their supporters had also received injuries.
Demanding cancellation of TET examinations, SFI and DYFI supporters organised a march from College Square. They were scheduled to give a Memorandum to the Governor.
When the rally reached Esplanade, the agitators put up a roadblock and sat on the Dorina crossing intersection resulting in massive traffic congestion.
Long queues of vehicles were seen upto Park Street. There were heavy traffic jam on Lenin Sarani, Chittaranjan Avenue, Moulali. Senior police officials went to the agitators and requested them to lift the roadblock.
They refused to listen to them and shouted slogans against the state Education minister and even burnt his effigy.
Senior police went for the second time and requested them to lift the blockade. But their requests fell flat. Finding no other option, police chased away the agitators who hurled brickbats at police. While fleeing, some of the agitators fell and received injuries.
Traffic movement became normal after an hour. The injured police personnel were taken to SSKM hospital.
The agitators alleged that the police had lathicharged them without provocation.
