10 held for hooliganism, policemen injured

Some police personnel were injured and a police vehicle was ransacked during a clash that broke out between two clubs over the immersion of idol. Police have held 10 persons for creating trouble. The incident occurred in Joyarbari area of Uluberia in Howrah. The incident had triggered tension among the local residents who fled from the spot when the clash broke out.

It was learnt that during the immersion, trouble broke out as the members of one club fell on the opponent group when they were marching down the lane at the time of the procession. Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed to calm the violence as the incident took an ugly turn. Police said that the members of the two clubs had earlier quarrelled over collecting subscription from the local residents. The matter was settled following the intervention of some local residents.

When the police personnel reached the spot, the agitated mob attacked them in which some of the police personnel were injured. The local residents also attacked a police jeep parked by the side of the road. RAF was pressed into action to control the situation and they controlled the trouble within an hour.
