It has been learnt that the central government is planning to include Kolkata’s historic pride in the heritage list considering the city as well as West Bengal’s importance in terms of its contribution towards art, culture and unforgettable memoirs during the Mughal and British period.
Speaking to the Millennium Post, minister of state for culture and tourism Shripad Yasso Naik confirmed that he will raise the issue with the state chief minister Mamata Banerjee during his official tour to Bengal and North East.
As per the Operational Guidelines (no.63, Decision 24COM para.VI.2.3.2) of World Heritage Committee to consider the proposal for inscription in World Heritage List, a property first needs to be listed under the tentative list. So far no proposal for inclusion of Kolkata city in the tentative list of world heritage list has been received by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Talking about the issue, Naik said, ‘The matter is in the pipeline and necessary steps will be taken soon. On 13 October, I am going to Kolkata and will try to discuss the matter with the state chief minister for her cooperation in making this initiative a great success.’
‘Apart from that we will also talk to the other concerned agencies in this matter,’ he added.
Currently, the 132-year-old Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) which is the second narrow-gauge railway in the world after Semmering Railway in Austria, was given the Unesco World Heritage status in November 1999. The Sundarbans National Park in the state is also under the similar status since 1987.
The other sites on the ‘tentative list’ are: Temples of Bishnupur in Bankura district, Neora Valley National Park in Darjeeling and Shantiniketan in Birbhum district. The initiative taken by the cultural ministry has invited praises from several artists, historians and political leaders in Bengal.
