KMC mops up record property tax

New inititatives by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation(KMC) have been instrumental in fetching the TMC run municipal board a whopping sum of Rs 1000 crore(in property taxes) in the fiscal ending February 2012, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee told Millennium Post on Tuesday.

One such scheme which was a runaway hit was the penalty and waiver scheme targeting property tax defaulters. ‘KMC earned Rs 300 crore worth additional revenue in the last fiscal compared to the previous financial year. The penalty and waiver scheme introduced by us fetched revenues worth Rs 360 crore alone,’ Chatterjee explained. Middleclass property tax defaulters –with dues ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh – responded rather well to the scheme which provided them with waiver of interest on arrears. The last date for filing was extended by the state Government owing to the overwhelming response of the public to the scheme.

Online filing – saving tax-payer’s time on long queues – has also drawn many property owners to the tax net this year. The extra revenues garnered will be used for development schemes that the KMC is taking up in various parts of the city over the last two years, said the Mayor.
