To provide information about best agriculture practices, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a television channel for farmers, DD Kisan to mark the completion of his government’s first year in office. The channel will help scientists and policy makers in connecting with the farmers to spread awareness  about latest technologies about agriculture and related information.

“Why experts from various fields including seed, soil and fertilizer cannot come together to help farmers and increase <g data-gr-id="21">pr oductivity</g>... The farming community is a big one. And, if we have to take India forward, we will have to take the villages forward,” Modi said.

While dedicating the channel to the nation, the Prime Minister said that the channel could serve as a medium to take forward the Green Revolution and the slogan of ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ given by former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Modi harped that satellite technology has helped the country get more accurate weather forecasts, which is helping the farmers plan ahead. Similarly, agricultural scientists can help farmers become self-reliant in <g data-gr-id="24">growth</g> of crops and pulses.

Calling for an increase in food-grains productivity from 2 tonnes per hectare to 3 tonnes per hectare, Modi stressed on making  tehsil (revenue block) as the unit of agricultural planning and development. He hoped that tehsils will compete with each other in crop production.
